PERTH, Aug 10 AAP - Main stories in today's edition of The West Australian:
P1: WA is poised to cut urban speed limits to 50kph. WA will ask Queensland to grant
an inquest into the death of protected witness Andrew Petrelis after a damning report
on the state witness protection program.
P2: Stories about the Fremantle mayor opening his door on Friday mornings so residents
can air their grievances; and a story about a security guard who lost her job because
she was "everyone's friend".
P3: Alan Bond's family stands to lose money and assets from family trust accounts under
new legislation, State Parliament has been told. Breakfast in Perth is the most expensive
of any capital city in Australia, Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show.
World: Indonesian Vice-President Megawati Sukarnoputri has saved the presidency of
Abdurrahman Wahid - she agreed to block moves to leave the threat of impeachment hanging
over his head. Two men were arrested in connection with the explosion in Moscow that killed
eight people and injured 93. Spanish authorities fear Basque separatists have launched
a fresh wave of terrorism in the north of the country after three blasts rocked the region
within 24 hours, killing five people.
Finance: Businessman Stan Wallis will relinquish his chairmanship of Amcor to give
him more time to run the board of AMP. Two Max Resources directors have been charged over
an allegedly improper share deal with a Bahamas-registered Singaporean company. WMC shares
softened further as the diversified miner confirmed it would suffer an $18 million charge
to second-half profits after it closed out its nickel hedge position for the rest of the
year. A major upheaval in the management of Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia is expected
tomorrow.
Sport: Free kicks could be paid against AFL players who accidentally knock umpires
over during games - this was under consideration as the league sought a solution to the
growing problem of field umpires being flattened. A big Hong Kong offer has been made
for star Perth mare Matriculate and she is expected to be sold in Victoria today on the
eve of her Melbourne Cup campaign.
