Violence has killed nearly 6,000 civilians and displaced more than 700,000 this year in the capital, where the Somali government has struggled to contain a bloody Islamic insurgency, a human rights group said Sunday.
Counting the dead is a difficult and imprecise task in the Horn of Africa nation, and an accurate tally is nearly impossible to come by in Mogadishu, one of the most violent and lawless cities in the world.
Witnesses say bodies were not picked up or even counted during some of the heaviest fighting this year, and few aid groups left in the capital do not have the tools to perform a reliable count.
