NSW: Hunt on to weed out corrupt police who take drugs

The New South Wales Police Integrity Commission has launched an investigation intodrug use among the state's police.

Police Minister JOHN WATKINS won't reveal what specifically sparked the PIC to launchthe inquiry.

But Mr WATKINS says he hopes drug abuse is not a widespread problem among the state's15,000 police officers.

Police Commissioner KEN MORONEY says there's no place in the NSW Police Service forofficers who use illicit substances or abuse prescribed drugs.

PIC Commissioner TERRY GRIFFIN says the inquiry -- called Operation Abelia -- beganafter evidence of illegal drug use by officers arose from a number of commission investigations.

Mr WATKINS has warned police with a drug or alcohol problem to come forward now and get help.
