SA: Mitsubishi hopes to extend US exports

Local car producer Mitsubishi is negotiating to extend the life of its exports intothe United States.

The company will sell about 17,000 cars in the US in the 12 months from October whenthe revised Magna arrives on American shores.

The car is sold there as a Diamante and sits at the top of the Mitsubishi range.

It was thought that the Mitsubishi's US division was tooling up to build the replacementmodel for release in 2005.

But vice president of sales and marketing BILL PIKE says the company is confident ofbeing a major exporter to the US for many years to come.

He says Mitsubishi is looking to extend the life of Magna and expects to get supportfrom the US to do so.
